The live 5K will be on Saturday, November 20 and begin at 9AM but please arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure that we can direct you to the appropriate location for your wave.
The live Fun Run will be on Saturday, November 20 and commence immediately after the 5K at 10:15AM. There will be no waves for the Fun Run.
We will be starting the 5K in waves separated by 5 minutes to help prevent overcrowding. During registration, you will be asked for your estimated 5K finish time. Faster runners will start in the earlier waves. Wave corrals will be assigned the week of the event to ensure an equal spread of participants based on their estimated finish times. If you want to run with someone, make sure you enter the same estimated finish time so that you will be placed in the same wave corral.
The live Janney 5K and Fun Run is complying with all DC requirements specific to Covid-19 protocol for special events and adhering to Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. All participants must wear mask on school property. During the race, participants who are not vaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear a mask and attendees who are vaccinated may chose not to wear one at their own discretion. Hand sanitizer stations will be deployed throughout the race site. We will encourage social distancing efforts during the pre- and post-race activities, and those activities may otherwise be modified based on Covid-19 precautions. We ask that you do your part to help keep the event safe, including getting vaccinated, performing self Covid-19 tests prior to race day, and not participating if you feel any of the symptoms of Covid-19 or have been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for the virus. You also have the option to change your registration from "live" to "virtual" up to two weeks before the race (no later than November 5).
Registrants who cannot join us live on November 20 can run the race anywhere and anytime before November 20 at 9AM. You can time yourself for a 5K or 1 mile Fun Run and upload your time to the race website. Once you have registered, you will receive an email with instructions on how to upload your time and pictures. Please also try to upload any photos of your virtual race no later than 9AM on November 20. The virtual race is just for fun, so there will be no rewards.
YES! We are excited to host a live opening ceremony at 9AM and a closing ceremony at 11AM on Saturday, November 20.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19: 3:30pm – 6:30pm
Please come to the back of Janney to the glass window gym. Please approach from the diagonal stairs outside the gym on the 42nd Street side. If you arrive to a line, please stand 6 feet apart from the person or family in front of you and don't forget your mask. You do not need to bring anything to packet pick up. Our volunteers will hand you a bag filled with giveaways from our sponsors as well as your family's race t-shirts and masks. We have teamed up with Janney Community Service Committee. Please scroll down to see the donation request.
NOTE: If you cannot make it to the packet pickup time, please make an arrangement with your friend/neighbor to pick up the packets for you.
We do not offer refunds if you are unable to participate in the event or the event is cancelled that day or weekend due to weather or otherwise, because significant race costs have already been incurred, and we cannot support this event as a public school otherwise. If the event is cancelled in advance due to government Covid-19 restrictions, then we will offer participants the ability to run the event virtually and will work to find a safe way to arrange for race participant pick up of race bags/t-shirts.
The Janney Community Service Committee is supporting Iona Senior Services through a gift card drive during race packet pick-up for the Janney 5k! Please consider purchasing gift cards from such stores as Giant, Safeway, Target, or CVS in denominations of $10-$25.
All ages are accepted. Typically, our Janney kids start running the 5K between 2nd-4th grade. If it is their first time running a 5K, we recommend several practice runs to get them acclimated to longer distances.
Of course. All pace groups are accepted.
The Fun Run distance is 1K. The Fun Run is for our youngest runners, usually through 1st or 2nd grade.
Yes – when you pick up your race t-shirt and swag bag, you will also get your race bib. It is essential that you bring your race bib to the live race in order to be timed properly. You will not receive a race bib for the virtual race.
We will rely on participants to upload their own race photos this year. Go to www.janney5k.org and click on the photos tab. From there you can add photos to your album.
Yes! We encourage you to wear your Janney 5K shirt when you run your race. Take pictures of you wearing it and send in your photo. We encourage you to also wear previous year’s race shirts while you are training so we create a real sense of community. Janney 5K t-shirts everywhere!
The registration money is used to cover costs to run the race and the rest goes to our PTA to support our school community. PTA funds are used to supplement the following:
Salaries for teachers and support staff positions (essential for our teaching and staffing model)
Technology materials and support
Textbooks, instructional materials, and basic supplies for classrooms
Professional Development for teachers and staff
Substitute teacher overlap days
Custodial equipment and supplies
Yes, we do. You can choose family sponsorship by going to www.janney5k.org and clicking on Donate or you can add it to your race registration. Each family sponsorship costs $100. The race committee will reach out to you to get the name of the child or family you would like to appear on the back of the race t-shirt.
Yes! This year has been tough on businesses, and we recognize that. We do not anticipate getting nearly as many corporate sponsorships as in previous years. If you know a business in our community who may be interested in supporting our race, please direct them to www.janney5k.org or reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Yes. We will be doing our traditional awards for M/F in each age group, we will have different types of awards. Award winners will be announced at the closing ceremony.
Whether this is your first 5K or you are a seasoned runner, we have posted training tips from now until race day. To start preparing for the race, please check out the Janney Family 5K Training Schedule, which is designed to prepare everyone from our youngest Jaguars to our more experienced runners in the training process. You will notice a combination of running and walking designed to build stamina and have all runners ready to run for about 30 minutes without stopping. All you need to get started is a pair of sneakers and a watch or timer. You can adjust the days of the week you run to fit your schedule but be sure to include a few rest days and/or some cross-training (more information on the importance of both of those to come).
