Has all of your training been giving your sore muscles? If so, you might need to improve your stretching routine. There are two types of stretching: static and dynamic. Static stretching is where you extend muscles and hold them for a period of time. A key point to remember is not to do static stretching with cold muscles. If you are doing static stretching you should do a light warm-up jog and then take a quick stretch break before continuing with your run or save stretching for the end of your workout. Static stretches should be held for 15-30 seconds each and repeated 1 to 2 times on each leg or arm. Try not to bounce or pull too hard on any given muscle group. Some great static stretches for runners include the butterfly stretch or the quad stretch where you balance on one leg while pulling the foot of your other leg towards your glutes. Dynamic stretching is when you add movement to your stretching to get your body warmed up. For dynamic stretching you include movements such as lunging or twisting and you do not hold your stretches for a period of time. Dynamic stretching is best used before running. Examples of dynamic stretches include hip circles, lunges with a side twist, leg pendulums (where you swing one leg back and forth while balancing on the other leg) and arm circles. Regardless of the type of stretching you choose make sure it is a daily part of your training routine (even on your rest days) in order to keep your body in top condition for race day! Check out the full training schedule on Janney 5K Training Page.

Description

Come and join in the 10th running of the Janney Elementary School 5K & Fun Run Race.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Janney 5K & Fun Run is now a VIRTUAL RACE. The switch to a virtual event allows us to still hold a race that is encouraging, fun, and uplifting despite the unique circumstances. You will still be able to pick up your race t-shirts & masks and swag items from Janney Elementary School. This is a difficult time for everyone, but we believe we can continue to celebrate our school and community in a safe and fun way by joining virtually in our annual tradition. There will be a virtual live opening and closing award ceremony (dates and time TBD).

  • Early Registration Opens: 5:00 PM Tuesday, September 29, 2020
  • Registration Fee Goes Up $5/Early Registration Closes: 11:59 PM Friday, October 23, 2020
    • NOTE: If you register after October 23, 2020, we cannot guarantee you a shirt or mask, and even if available, we cannot guarantee your sizes.
  • Packet Pickup (TBD): Week of November 9, 2020
  • Race Start Time: 6:00 AM on Saturday, November 14, 2020
  • Race End Time: 11:59 PM on Saturday, November 21, 2020

Let's come together as a community to show our support for Janney teachers, staff, and students, and the greater Tenleytown/AU Park community through a safe and fun virtual race. The Janney PTA thanks you for supporting the race and hopes you can join us virtually.

Events Options and RaceJoy
What is a virtual race?

Runners who sign up for a virtual race register online and simply choose a starting line, whether it's a treadmill or a neighborhood street or a route provided to you. You run the race distance, and upload your finishing time. The window for completing your run will be November 14 - 21, 2020. All run times must be submitted by 11:59PM on November 21, no exception!

Why are there four race options? What are the different race events?

You can sign up to run the Janney 5K USATF-race certified or Janney 1K Fun Run course using the RaceJoy app, which will guide you through the courses and cheer you on. You can also run your own 5K and Fun Run that is appropriately distanced, timed, and uploaded to this website using any other mobile running application or you can just manually enter your time.

What is RaceJoy?

RaceJoy is a free mobile app that provides real-time GPS tracking of your actual location and running route.  It measures your distance, cheers you along the way, and tells you when you are done.  It will work with the certified traditional Janney 5K & Fun Run courses or any other course you choose to run. Participants must carry their phone to take advantage of RaceJoy’s features. You will get additional details about downloading the RaceJoy app and using it to support your race once you register.
